ICSSPE and ACHPER in Brisbane

Last week I had an excellent opportunity to visit Brisbane of Australia where I participated the major meetings of ICSSPE for this summer. Along with ICSSPE we also participated the major Conference of PE Teachers in Australia. The ACHPER meeting attracted hundreds of PE teachers mostly from Australia but also around the world. Even 4 persons from Finland.

I found Brisbane an attractive City. Old and new together as you can see from the picture above. Albert Street Church was beautiful and the big buildings behind less beautiful. One may argue about City architecture. However, all systems seemed to function well. It was nice to stay there even though it was "winter" in the southern hemisphere. It reminded me about "Summer in Finland". Around +20 C during the daytime and around +10 C during the night time. So I enjoyed my stay there, indeed. I even found an attractive Swimming Pool from the Queenspark. I visited that place three times while it was a must to have some exercise along with the Conferences. It required some attention to learn to swim on my left.

The main thing to stay in Brisbane was certainly the ICSSPE meetings. I'll report about those meetings in more detail a little later. Now I'd like to raise a question to your consideration. The question is whether or not Public Health should be an issue in School Physical Education. This is not self evident at all. There seem to be a tendency among leading PE professors that the Public Health is NOT an issue in PE. This was confirmed this summer in both ACHPER meetings in Brisbane as well as in the ECSS meeting in Oslo earlier this summer. What is your opinion to the statement as follows in the picture below? I hope you can read it.
